E-Code vs Physical Gift Card: What Nigerian Sellers Should Check First
An e-code arrives digitally, usually by email or in an order page. A physical gift card is a card you can hold, often bought at a retail till. Both can represent stored value, but the evidence you can provide and the problems you may face are different. Before requesting a Naira quote, identify the format and check its origin.
What changes between the two formats?
| Question | E-code | Physical card |
|---|---|---|
| Where is the code? | In an email, account order page or downloadable document | Under a scratch panel or label, or printed on a receipt |
| What proves the purchase? | Original order email and retailer order record | Till receipt, activation receipt and intact packaging |
| Common issue | Email forwarded to the wrong person or an old code reused | Card never activated or packaging tampered with |
| What should you tell a buyer first? | Brand, region, currency, denomination and delivery source | The same details, plus whether the card was activated at checkout |
A digital format is not automatically safer; a physical format is not automatically more valuable. The brand, region, denomination, current demand and verification result still matter.
Before sending any code
Start with a code-free description: for example, “US Apple Gift Card, $50, email delivery” or “UK Steam Wallet card, £20, physical card with receipt.” This is enough to discuss whether the card type is supported and to request an indicative rate. Use the Trusioo rate calculator for a current estimate, then confirm the exact variant and process with support.
Do not include a clear photo of the PIN or redemption code in a public review, social media reply or group chat. The US Federal Trade Commission explains that a card number and PIN can be used even when you still hold the physical card. Keep the full code private until you knowingly enter an agreed verification process with a party you have checked.
How to inspect a physical card
Look for a damaged scratch panel, lifted stickers or packaging that seems resealed. Keep the receipt that shows the purchase and, where applicable, activation. The FTC's card inspection advice notes that criminals can copy codes from cards on a shop display before the buyer loads them. If a newly purchased card fails, the retailer and card issuer will usually need purchase evidence.
You can take a photo of the front, receipt and serial number for your own records. Store those images privately. A serial number is not necessarily the redeemable code; Apple, for example, distinguishes the two in its redemption support instructions.
How to inspect an e-code
Open the original retailer email or your order history, not just a cropped screenshot of a code. Check the brand, issuer country, currency and order status. Make sure the email is a genuine purchase or gift notification rather than an unsolicited message asking you to click an unfamiliar link. Keep the order ID and delivery date; if the code fails, the retailer can use them to investigate.
If you have already added a code to your own account, it may no longer be transferable as an unused gift card. For instance, Google says redeemed Google Play balance generally cannot be moved to another Google Account. Tell the truth about redemption status before asking for any quote.
When the value is uncertain
Do not try repeated redemption attempts on multiple accounts just to establish a balance. Some issuers treat errors, region mismatch and prior redemption differently. Start with the issuer's official help pages and the purchase receipt. If the code was a gift, ask the purchaser for the issuing country and proof of purchase without pressuring them to disclose unrelated account details.
In short: the first message should identify the card, not expose its secret. Gather the right proof for its format and agree on the verification steps before sharing any redeemable information.
